They sat on the rocks, watching the sailboats bob in the distance, and finished lunch. While he gazed out across the ocean, it occurred to him that she might be supporting her family, and he wanted to kick himself for not thinking of that sooner.
âDo you send your parents money, is that why you donât spend any on yourself?â
She froze.
He rested one hand on her thigh and used the other to lift her chin toward him. âIâm on your side, no judgments here. I would do the same thing if I needed to. My familyâs everything to me.â
She picked at the imaginary lint on her jeans, not saying a word.
âAlexa? Please talk to me.â
âMy father entered into a bad contract with a large grain supplier with a reputation for being unscrupulous. For the last few years theyâve been buying up farmland all over Minnesota, putting small- to medium-sized farms, like my familyâs, out of business. He should never have signed the contract. It was so one-sided even a first year law student wouldâve known better.â
âDid he have a lawyer?â
âThatâs the strangest part. Yes. And I canât imagine he would have gone against his lawyerâs advice and signed that contract.â
âMaybe when he read it he didnât see it as a bad deal.â
âHe never read it.â
âHow do you know?â
âHe has severe dyslexia. Iâve seen the contract, and thereâs no way he could have made heads or tails of it.â
âIf he has dyslexia, and couldnât read the contract, canât he get out of it?â
âItâs not that simple. Heâs never admitted to the dyslexia. He compensates, pretends itâs his failing eyesight, but heâs dyslexic. Owen, too.â
She sighed heavily. âI donât send money to them. Iâve worked out a payment plan with the company to pay off the debt. But the terms are tough because they donât really want the money. They want the land.â
âWhat are the payments like?â
âAbout eight thousand dollars a month.â
âAlexa,â he breathed. âYou need help with this. Thatâs got to be your entire salary.â
âI know. I plan on getting a second job, but as long as Iâm shadowing you, itâs impossible. I canât save any money for Owenâs education until I get out from under this mess. The payments will end in about three years, but I need to start saving before then.â
âWhat does Owen need?â
âHe needs a tutor and a special school. If he has those things, he can have the same opportunities as any other child. Right now he hardly goes to school at all. He hates it. My father remembers the pain of school too, of feeling like youâre dumb even when youâre not, so they let Owen stay home. And even if he went to school, with all the budget cuts, they canât give him the services he needs to succeed.â
âThereâs got to be a way to help him.â
âThere is. I can help him. I can make sure he has everything he needs. I can make sure he doesnât end up like my dad, hiding, isolated, and ashamed.
